BRIEF IRISH HISTORY
This is by no means, a complete history of Ireland, but rather a selection of a few highlights pertaining to Ireland’s early beginning and the Irish People – the many hardships which they were forced to endure in order to keep their Faith, land and even their name. It is inclined to give us some insight and the possible reason for our great, great grandparents and their relatives, leaving their homes and native land and migrating on long and perilous journeys to such countries as Canada, the United States, and Australia.

5th Century – Irish history really begins with the Christianization of Ireland by St. Patrick, early in the 5th Century.

8th Century – Danish and Norse established themselves in the East of Ireland, weakened by Brian Boru and were finally defeated by him in 1014. They were ultimately absorbed in the population. This Danish invasion lasted 219 years.

1166 – The Norman Invasion took place, the land was taken over and constant fighting took place – for almost 276 years.

1536 – Henry of England was declared Supreme Head of the Church.

1558 – Elizabethian Reformation – State Religion established under Queen Elizabeth.

17th Century – The Potato was introduced into Ireland, production of the large crop encouraged a rapid increase in the population.

1641 – Cromwell Conquest of Ireland caused bloodshed, destruction, resulting in plague, pestilence, and famine.

1691 – Penal Laws which debarred Catholics from all share in Irish Parliment, trades and professions, education, Office (large or small) Juries, the Electrol vote, the right to arms and a horse. All Archbishops, and Bishops were ordered to leave the country. One priest was permitted per parish regardless of size and he was not allowed to set foot outside his parish without special permission.

1798 – The United Irishmen Rebellion took place.

1829 – Irish Roman Catholics were emancipated- Catholics were admitted to the Parliament, Commissions in the Services, and inner bar.

1843 – Repeal Year – O’Connell’s Repeal Agitation.

1846-48 – Potato Famine. The cause of many families migrating. Death and emigration reduced the population of Ireland by ⅓ in 10 years

1867 – Fenian Movement – whose purpose was to free Ireland from England.

1871 – Disestablishment of the Irish State Church.

About 1690 A.D.

‘Old Patrick’ our ancestor’s father was a sea captain or ship commander whose name I think was Patrick. Tradition tells he was a Protestant but his wife was a sincere Roman Catholic named Morrisey. In these days Ireland suffered under the most severe penal laws, such a marriage (as above) was deemed a sort of treason and had to be kept strictly hidden, for if discovered the punishment was dreadful; however, the good mother reared her sons faithful to the tenets of the Catholic religion so thus, (Thanks to Almighty God) you and I have escaped being born heretics. 

Jame Britton (my grandfather) being ‘Old Patrick’s’ eldest son lived on this rock and farm(where I now live) and buried the old couple.

(Thomas) John who was the second son lived near here and reared a large family. He had a son called William (Billy) Britton who went to Australia with four or five sons and one daughter. They settled at Willow Tree, Murrarundy, out from Sydney and became very rich (found Diamond mines). Thomas had two other sons, one called Patrick, who died in Scotland, and one named Andrew who died at home here after raising a large family.

History of St. Agathe

The Parish of St. Agatha is found partly in the county of Lotbiniere and partly in the county of Megantic.The County of Lotbiniere originally formed part of Buckingham County (presently abolished). The latter included that part of the Province of Quebec which is bounded on the North by the St. Lawrence River, on the east by the County of Dorchester and the west by a large tract of land commonly called the “______ Seigniory”. The County of Lotbiniere was formed in 1829.

The following is an abridged statement of the Territory of Ste. Agathe:

On April 1st, 1738, the Beaurivage Seigniory was conceded to Gilles Rageot, Merchant of Quebec, by the Marquis of Beauhainoi and by Gilles Hoquart, Governor and Intendant respectively of New France (Canada was under French rule as claimed by Cartier). Later it was sold to Alexander Fraser for the sum of 250 pounds by Gilles-Joseph and Louis Etienne, the two sons of Gilles Rageor of Bearivage Alexander Fraser, who had but one son who was killed. Therefore on June 25, 1791, he bequeathed his possessions to his grandson Walter Davidson. At the time of his inheritance, Walter was only 10 months old, so his father, Arthur Davidsons Notary, was appointed as guardian of the inheritance. The Seigniory was then transmitted to Arthur Ross, son-in-law of Davidson and successively from father to son, A.R. Ross to A.D Ross. The latter remained proprietor during 20 years, he then willed it to his wife Mary Simpson Ross. This portion of the land is presently known as “Ross Seigniory”.

On January 16, 1637, a company of New France conceded a tract of land measuring one league to John Beauvais. This concession was destined for the Ursuline, who were to settle in Quebec a few years later. It was not until Sept. 12, 1646 that Fr. Jerome Lalement, Jesuit, took possession by power of attorney, granted him by the Ursulines for the benefit of this religious order. The ursulines were proprietors of the St. Croix Seigniory until 1923. The actual owner is Lt. Colonel Chas. A. Chauveau. 

1847 – The first chapel was built in St. Agathe

1853 – St. Agathe became a parish. Fr. Richardson was named parish  priest of the St. Giles and St. Agathe, he resided in St. Giles.

1855 – New church was built

1866 – Church was destroyed by fire

1868 – Another church was built

1925- Church once again destroyed by fire

1927- New church dedicated

The first settlers that came to St. Agathe only means of transportation was by horse-drawn wagons, ox-drawn carts or on foot. To do their shopping they were obliged to walk through the forest or risk being swallowed by the impassable “Savannahs” (more commonly known as the savannah) to reach the nearest village of St. Giles or St. Sylvester. The first known stores were opened around 1854 or earlier, in Ste. Agathe village.

The exact date of the arrival of the first settlers is not specified. However, before 1830 there were a few residents who requested the building of Gosford Road. At this date, the new settlers had no roads, they were obliged to travel on foot through woods and savannas. The first settlers built themselves a log cabin with bark and clay. They had to chop large trees and burn them to clear  this land for cultivation. However, small profit was drawn from this wood, since with the ashes they made potash salt. Salt was put in bags and carried on their backs to the nearest village and they would exchange it for flour. Ten to twelve caribou were quite a common sight in those days. Today there is practically no caribou left. Although game was abundant, hunting was much more complicated in those days. The only available firearm was called a “musel loader”. First a cap had to be placed, then they would insert the powder in the barrel by means of an animal horn, and it was then stuffed (paper, etc.) After this came the bullet made at home with lead, then more stuffing. All this was packed by a ramrod. It was then ready for firing. 

Turtle duck hunting was another source of income, birds (about as big as a pigeon and very palatable) sold for from 10 to 15c a dozen in Quebec. Birds were snared with corn and grain and trapped in a cage.

Maple sugar, of course, was another source of income. However, it was made in troughs, using wooden spouts and cast iron kettles. 

The municipality of the Parish of St. Agatha which comprises the territory located in the St. Croix and the Beaurivage Seigniory in the Lotbiniere County was civilly erected in 1857 under Sir Edmund Head in virtue of the act 18M, Chapter 100.

The Cadastral survey of the St. Agatha Parish municipality was enforced August 25, 1879 and bears the numbers from 1 to 360. 

In 1854 a council was formed several years before its civil erection. A mayor and council was named; some of the members of the first council were James Campbell and Patrick Noonan.

Hugh lives in the town of Donegal about 11 miles from here and has a large family of sons, daughters, and grandchildren.

4th Daughter – Sarah Brinton, born _____ died ______, married Roger Mullin, who lived in a large island of Lough Erne about 3 miles from here. They had a large family (F.B.)

5th Daughter – Rose Britton was the sister who married a man named Tracy about 4 or 5 miles from here and had a large family (F.B)

6th Daughter – Anne – born ________ died ________ I don’t know who she wed.

7th Daughter – Mary, born _________ died ________ Married a man named Teague McGrath.

NOTE: Mary’s daughter lived in Fincashel and married there. Her son lives there – age 80s years. (He lives in Carrentressy) about 30 perches from our house. Because of the odious penal laws there was no baptismal register kept by the Catholic clergy, so that we could not have any of these recorded and can only guess at them.

Note: Daughter – Anne (1784-1872) She (Anne) died in West Broughton, Quebec, in 1872 and was conveyed to St. Agathe, Lotbiniere, P.Q by a large and imposing funeral from both parishes, interred in Ste. Agathe burying ground (after a solemn Requiem Mass being chanted) by the side of her husband, William Campbell. May he Rest in Peace.

She was married to a Mr. McGuire in Fincashel, town of Pattigo. Had one child with the father, who died about 1 ½ years after the marriage. Then she married again, in Fincashel to William Campbell. (My Aunt Anne used to deal in certain wares and in her line of business used to pass often through the village of Mountcharles, it was on one of these trips that she introduced the ‘match subjects’ between Johnny Rogers and her sister, Mary Britton (The Bishop’s Mother) so you see how lucky she was in her love making affairs.) *William Campbell had, I think, four or five sisters. One of them was married to a stone mason (who lived in the town of Pettigo) Daniel Campbell, so they were double Campbells. They raised a large family, one lady of them still lives in Pettigo keeping a fine business store or shop. Dan’s eldest son was John. He was educated to be a clergyman but changed notions and started to Australia to follow the Press business, editing a paper. The second son was William, the third was Peter. There were three daughters, Bridget, Jane and Mary – the last  two are dead, and Bridget is a widow, her husband (Danis McGrath) having died ten or twelve years ago. She has a considerable family, some dead and some married. When you come to Pettigo, you will have the pleasure of visiting this lady, she, no doubt will inform you about the Campbells. (F.B to Fr. Note: I sent three messages to cousin Fanny with members of her family to come down and give me all the information she could about the deaths and ages of her family and she never came forward, but acted both careless and lazy in the matter. Her youngest brother Patrick went to California and I believe died out there. Her oldest daughter Maggie went to New York some 8 years ago (1882) and died before she was there two years. (about 1884). Fanny had one son and two daughters still living at home with her. (From F.B to Fr. Campbell)

Note: I believe none of these, my brothers, ever married. It pleased the Lord to call them at an early age. May their souls rest in peace. My sister married Edward McMahon, County Fermanagh (7 miles from here) 2 ½ years after marriage her husband died leaving only one child named Mary. I married Margaret McMahon near Ederney, Co. Fermanagh (5 miles from here.) Our first born child, Mary, died at 5 ½ years. Our second child, Anne is 6 ½ years (1890) and is attending school, 2 miles from here (F.B)

NOTES: *Celebrant of Mass for the deceased Sister Martha, was her cousin Father Francois Campbell.

James Rogers was ordained as a priest in Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 2nd, 1852 and consecrated Bishop of Chatham at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island by His Grace Archbishop Connelly of Halifax on Aug. 15, 1860, and is still Bishop. (note – died Mar. 23, 1903.)

NOTE: When John Rogers first came to Fincashel to look after “Mary” (his future wife) he had with him as spokesman a heart going, sprightly young boy by the name of Campbell. No doubt it was to him that Mary Rogers was afterwards married. When you come to Fincashel, ‘tis likely that you and I may pay Mountecharles a visit and perhaps we can get a deal of information about the Bishop’s family and friends. (F.B)

*Note: Ann Campbell (Monaghan) died April 27, 1889, in St. Patrick Beaurivage, P.Q. after 3 months of illness. She was entirely resigned to the Holy Will of God. Her death was really admirable, having been fortified by the Last Rites of Our Holy Church. She was beloved by all who knew her and this high esteem was manifested by the large number who attended her funeral notwithstanding the inclement weather at this season of the year. May she R.I.P. (F.C.PC.)

2nd Note: My dear mother, (Catherine McGinley Campbell) died on Thursday at 7 a.m. in her own home in Ste. Agathe, after an illness of about seven months on December 31, 1891, Feast of St. Sylvester. The first notice of this came to me on Jan. 26,1892 in Rome. I had several masses said for her and Holy Communions made.

My dear father, (James Campbell) on Thursday morning at 8 o’clock died in his home on March 12, 1896. Which word came to me on the 13th of March by Telegram. (F.C.PC.)

NOTE: Father Francis Campbell was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on Oct. 30, 1892 in Rome by a Cardinal. He died at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield, California on March 18th, 1916. Fr. Campbell’s classical studies were made at Halifax, N.S. and his theological course in the College of the Propaganda was at Rome. His first charge was Barnaby River, New Brunswick where he remained until 1905, when he was appointed Charles in the same province. When Archbishop McNeil (of Toronto) was appointed to the See of Vancouver in 1910, Father Campbell accompanied him thither, and for two years labored in British Columbia. He went to California in 1912 for his health and remained as Rector of the Holy Trinity Church, Burbank, California until he died. He was seriously ill for nearly a year and though he showed some improvement at times, he was never sufficiently recovered to perform his parochial duties in that last year.

His body was taken to Los Angeles and solemn obsequies took place in the Cathedral. Interment was in the priest’s plot at Calvary where the Benedictus was chanted by the assembled clergy, the prayer at the graveside was read by Fr. Holden. Before the body was taken to Los Angeles, a solemn Requiem was sung in the St. Francis Church in Bakersfield. Celebrant was Fr. Holden. About fifty priests were present in the sanctuary at the Cathedral. Fr. J.S Laubacher preached the eulogy.

Solemn funeral rites with panegyric pronounced by Rev. Fr. Burns, S.K. Rector of Campeon College, were held at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Regina, Sask. The body was laid to rest beside that of Monsignor Mathieu, the first Archbishop of Regina, in Regina Cemetery.
